| The Cedar Key RV Resort on the Nature Coast of Florida 6 miles to the island coastal community of Cedar Key Rentals and Membership available |
The final stretch of the Suwannee River makes up Levy County's western county line; the mysterious Withlacoochee River defines the county's southern border; and, dividing the county itself, the wild Waccasassa River joins in the endless trip through the unspoiled beauty of the region to the vast tidal marshes of the Gulf. At the center of Florida's Nature Coast, Levy County offers the traveler a glimpse into a look at Florida's not-too-distant past, where large expanses of salt marshes and sable palms abound. Nearly one fifth of the county is set aside for state and national wildlife areas. It is home for hundreds of thousands of nesting shore birds including the elusive Roseate Spoonbill and the bald eagle. Visitors will also enjoy opportunities for boat rides into Cedar Key National Wildlife Refuge for a close up encounter with a sea bird rookery. Hugging Levy's Gulf shore, the charming island city of Cedar Key is a great place to experience Florida's history and heritage. The town was Florida's first Gulf port and where its first railroad terminated. The heritage of fishing continues on the island and a large fishing pier is a very popular spot. At Manatee Springs, a first magnitude spring, manatees can be seen grazing in the crystal clear water that runs to the Suwannee River. Another first magnitude spring is at Fanning Springs where one can enjoy a great view of the beautiful Suwannee River. The last steamboat stationed on the Suwannee River, the City of Hawkinsville, lies beneath the waters where divers often explore the archaeological preserve. Blue Grotto, near Williston, is the largest clear-water cavern in Florida with visibility of more than 200 feet. |
